State of the Union Address to Group

For most of us, this part of the year is when we slow down on blogging to attend to personal details and participate in holiday functions. I have news for readers that might be on downside. We de-rezzed the gallery in Virtual Gay World. There was absolutely zero traffic thru the reader spot except when a meeting or other gallery function was planned. Then after no further activity and someone offered to rent the land the gallery was occupying, we took it all down in a matter of moments. Not long after was when I started a new blog that Eddi wrote about here.

Now approaching its two month mark, its reader hit count has surpassed the whole history count for Rhino Writers' blog (the one you are reading now.) In the in-world group, I posted that I would be interested in allowing more people to post on the new blog. So far, nobody has taken the challenge. I haven't found a new space for Rhino to call home in-world. Mostly because I don't feel the collective membership feels it necessary. The same goes for community activities and chances to grow exposure anywhere for our members' blogs.

With exception to one weekly poet, I never see any of our readers post links to any of their favorite blog posts in the notices (YES every group member still has posting rights in the in-world Rhino group - AND invitation rights.) Just like a certain mainland rail-road that just de-rezzed and gave up all of its 12-sim parcels back to LL, with lack of ideas, new or old, or further enthusiasm, I'm finding it hard to say this is still a group worthy of maintaining. Let me know your thoughts.

 Yours truly, Avacar Bluestar

Blogging Tip: Build Your Readership Through a Home Page Hyperlink

I picked this tip up from JayR Cela at the Virtual World Technologist.

Always put a Hyperlink to your home page under your masthead or near the top of your blog. It will help build readership since many people will not arrive at your home page -- and may want to check the rest of your content out.

You can do this in blogger by placing a text widget in your layout and making sure you use a hyperlink for your blogs name.

This is a very easy way to built readership, and something that I never thought of until I saw Jay's blog.

Attention Blogspot Bloggers: How To Make a Back-Up Copy of Your Blog For Safekeeping

Blogger Sign In Page

Google Blogger users (and everyone else) should make a back-up copy of their blog for safekeeping. This is in case Google decides to take down your blog for the wrong reason (they are known to do this), or if you accidentally trash your blog.

It is very easy to do.

1. Sign into your blog (above)

2. Go to your design page. You will see the following list.

3. Select "other".

4. Then select Export blog and download blog.

5. You will end up with an XML file that looks something like this. Hold on to it.

I do this every three months or so. It is a good safety precaution. Better safe than sorry!

Notice to All Blogger Users: Are Your Settings Allowing Social Media Sharing? It is Easy to Do - Read On

Do you author a Google Blogger blog?

If you are not allowing for social media sharing, you should be. This will allow your readers to quickly post your posts on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media-- and allow them to easily reblog your content. This will increase your viewership.

It is very easy to do.

First, open your layout feature in "my blogs"

Then, open  "edit" in blog posts.

Once you open edit, you will see this menu for configure blog posts. Make sure "show share buttons" are checked.   You can also check "allow email of posts" if you wish.

Hit "save" on the bottom and close. You can also rearrange where the buttons go, but I just use the default location.

And that's it- you are now done!

Fine Arts Tour during August brings new eyes to Rhino too!

There is an art expo organized by Owl Braveheart that is featuring 3 different artists in the Gallery in and surrounding the Rhino Writer's reader gallery in SL during the month of August.  Check it out as soon as you get a chance.  We know some of its visitors will gain exposure to your member blogs as it had during the previous two showings here when Eddi Haskell had French & Italian sim photos displayed.

Important Message from Eddi Haskell About Account Hacking

I published this in my own blog today and am posting it here since it is such an important issue

A good friend of mine in Second Life, a top Second Life blogger was hacked today. Someone managed to get into her account (it looks like a professional blackmailing service that sells your information back for a fee), take it over, and cause all sorts of difficulties.

Make sure you take the following action to avoid this happening to you:

 1. Use a combination of letters and random numbers on your password. Do not, for example, have a variation of two second life account names as your password with no numbers.

 2. Change your password every year at least, every six months is better.

 3. Run spyware checkers on your computer. Things like keystroke programs that can deliver your password to a third party have been reported in the past.

Of course, take basic precautions. And remember, there is no such thing as a secret in Second Life if more than one person knows.

Take care!
